You know you’re probably a med student when….

You know you’re a med student when…
1. You have heart sounds in your ipod and you listen to it during your free time.
2. You actually programmed these heart sounds as your phone ringtone.
3. You start having ’sphygmo’ or cardio examination parties over the weekends.
4. You play at least one musical instrument.
5. You start having dreams relating to your PBL topic (ie. heart transplant).
6. You watch every episode of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘House’ and have them in your ipod.
7. You spent at least 10 minutes of PBL session dicussing about the latest episode before moving on to the case.
8. You start badgering your housemates with your stethoscope for practice.
9. You learn to drink (eventually).
10. You start poking each other during study sessions in the library trying to feel each other’s pulses.

Interesting isn’t it?

Anyway, I’m trying to get pictures of the ‘excursions’ that we’ve been having the last few days. There was Andrew’s Brunch Party, Clarissa’s Suprise Hot Chocolate Party, TV night… This week was super crazy with people passing out in each others houses and missing their 8 am lectures the next day…

A weekend of birthdays…

Since so many people had thier birthday these few days, I think I’ll write a bit of my experience with them…. =)

Cheryl turned 18 last saturday. So a bunch of us decided to give her a nice surprise by waking her up at 7 am in the morning, banging at her bedroom balconey in our PJ’s complete with a birthday cake decorated with 18 sparkles plus a few more others party poppers. It was definitely a surprise. =) The hardest part was waking up at 630 in the morning for that. After that, we just stuffed the cake in her fridge to enjoy later while we all went back to sleep. lol. Later in the afternoon, we gathered again at her house to feast on the cake (which was so much more better than ‘chocolate indulgence’ from secret recipe).

Clarissa turned 18 yesterday. And I had culture shock. haha… ok, not really la. But I wasn’t expecting an 18th birthday party with champange, punch, artfully arranged finger food, even more deliciously arranged desserts and fruits. Everyone dressed up to the nines. I was thinking more along the lines of music, dancing etc. I was obviously wrong. =P The only crazy part was when everyone headed over to the Buddha Bar where they booked a karaoke room for 2 hours. Oh well, that was an experience.

Today, there were two parties. (so many right??) =) Anna turns 18 today and her party was more typical with booze and all that. Plus everyone in costumes. =) But I wasn’t able to attend her party because I decided to celebrate Vanessa’s birthday instead. She turns 21 today!!! =) One of the most important days in your life. They party was at my apartment and it was basically just dinner and games. Something I was more used to since we were all malaysians and singaporeans. Not like these australian parties.

I forsee a lot of parties this year since most of the australians are turning 18 this year (and how can someone turn 18 without throwing a big birthday bash right???). I think I’m in dire need of dresses. I never had any use for them back in Malaysia since the only thing that I’ll most probably attend that requires me to dress up is like those grad dinners. But here, it’s almost like a neccessity already fro all major / minor parties. Med school jazz night is coming up on April 5th (and one of my friends is turning 21 that day!!!) - one dress needed. Med Ball on May 5th after that - I think I’ll recycle my dress for that, I don’t care if they say I’m commiting fashion suicide by doing that.

This is going to be a very interesting year.

Sheep heart dissection on monday. The med school stinks of sheeps that have been brought in for the postgrad student’s experiments and I suspect they’ve safed the hearts of those poor sheep for us to cut up. 170 hearts for every first year. No need to share.

Med Camp ‘07, President’s Keg, sphygmo party…

Yes yes… super long time no update d. Very sorry. It’s just that I don’t want to waste my download quota unnecessarily. However, I did find someone’s wireless modem so right now I’m using that without compromising my uni quota. But signal very low… Reminiscent of ‘the good ol’ days’ at Akasia College where one would spent one hour using the net and the other hour cursing the slow internet connection. lol

Anyway, as the title of this post suggests, I went to Med Camp. Open to 1st year medical students only, 100 lucky people (actually no la… have to pay $120!!!), were whisked of to a quite and isolated spot at the Adelaide Hills (so isolated, we can’t even get network connection =P) for 3 days 2 nights of fun, partying and so called clinical skills workshop (Main purpose was partying actually). It was supposedly a time for us to bond with each other since we’ll be going through med school for the next 6 years. Overall, it was fun. =) First night was a uniform costume party and yours truly went as a flight attendant. (lol, I know, but that was like the easiest without having to spent any money) So we spent the whole night dancing and for some, drinking. Free alcohol (as usual), and punch. It was either it, or go thirsty.

Next morning, everyone was woken up at the crazy hour of 730am for breakfast. Then we had our clinical skills workshop! Had fun, doing casting, suturing and taking each other’s blood pressure etc…. then we had games in the afternoon. I came back sunburnt, and it has yet to heal. >.< Again, there was a party that night except that this time, it was open to all the seniors and juniors alike. Lets say that it was packed, crazy and fun, in a way. There was this boat racing game (it's a drinking game, which I have to say those med students have perfected) before the party officially started. It's amazing the way they can just throw the alcohol down their throat.

Pictures...

Haha… Borats. Three of them. =)

Party!!!

Spoons Championship.

Spoons.

Med camp was the week before… this week (last friday), we had the President’s Keg. Basically, everyone goes there to drink and drink only. Well, maybe to socialise abit but that wasn’t the main purpose. We went there for a couple of hours and then left for our own party at Amanda’s apartment. Our very own sphygmo party!!! Lol. Actually, we just wanted to practice taking blood pressure with each other. Did a bit of practice (Tony’s BP was 130/90 which was surprising since he didn’t drink any of the alcohol at the party). But,we ended up watching Terminator 3 instead which was one of Andrew’s favourite movies, apparently. He knows some of the dialogue by heart. -__-”

I like Adelaide. =)

Ps* AMSA convention is in Adelaide this year!!!! All med students, make sure you come or I’ll personally hunt you down. Lol.

Pps* Does anyone have any plans for the coming April or winter hols???

Some random pictures taken in Adelaide…
